Surya is the sun god of the Raj-Hamutian Pantheon. He is often compared to Aurelion the Golden Sun for his beauty and goodness. It is possible the two gods are one in the same even if that interferes with their respective origins.
Surya's most famous legend involves his marriage to the daughter of Tvastar the Golden Spider.
Surya's cosmic sibling, Tvastar, is the god of artifice. He is a tinkerer, inventor and builder of wonders beyond imagination. In fact, while the creation of humans is debated among Raj-Hamutians, one legend says that he crafted all the first of each group of people and animals of the world in his workshop. He is considered a mercurial god with alien intelligence. After all, his totemic form is that of a spider. He weaves beautiful creations but often mortals and gods alike become trapped in his creations.
Of his creations, the most beautiful and insidious might be Saranya the Cloud Maiden.
Surya's other brothers, led by Indra, went to Tvastar to commission the sun god his own wife. Surya had a serious problem; he was filled with the vigor of youth but he had no partner. He had fallen in love with many maidens and visited them but, in the heat of passion, they would combust before his radiance. And so, they asked Tvastar to create a wife that could survive their brother's intensity in love-making.
Tvastar created the fairest maiden imaginable for his brother, picking for her the totemic form of a unicorn mare to match his brother's equine spirit, and gave her spirit with dominion over the clouds in the sky. After all, the clouds are capable of obscuring the sun in the long days of Sun-Meet. He agreed to introduce his creation to his brother but he warned her not to gaze upon Surya directly because, even with the precautions he had made, he could not guarantee her safety from the full brunt of his solar body.
And so it was that she was introduced to Surya and coupled with him.
They were wed but she was unable to look upon her groom, despite the knowledge that he was the most beautiful of the gods to look upon. She fell for him despite this; his voice was as warm as a sun-meet's day, his hands were like the kiss of a warm breeze and his lips, upon meeting, were the sun-rise and the sun-set all at once.
After the wedding, they retired to a private chamber in the heavens to consummate their love. Surya's lovemaking was beyond anything she could have prepared herself for and, in her naivete, she cast aside the god's warning and opened her eyes to gaze upon Surya, if not just for a moment.
But even just a moment was too much.
The intensity of her husband was too great for even the goddess to bear that night. She might've died in that moment if not for her own divinity.Saranya left behind a shadow of herself Chaya (chimera) to finish making love to the god as she fled to the forest.
Chaya, disguised as Saranya, bore a child by Surya from Saranya's suffering. The child born to her was Rakta-Beej the Bloody Prince (bat). In Saranya's absence she raised him towards the goal of overthrowing Surya and installing her asura son as the wielder of the sun.
This plot threatened the very balance of the cosmos.
Saranya survived by giving birth to her first child by Surya, Yami, who instead died and was cast into Naraka. Naraka is the Hamutian underworld, a transitive plane for souls before reincarnation and the home of asuras. The plane is filled with massive pillars, each looking as if it is hewn by petrified human body parts and bones, and, those who evil souls cast to the floor of Naraka and to the asuras who dwell at the bottom of these pillars, waiting to torment souls, the dead must escape by climbing the pillars.
Asuras are evil outsiders, similar to demons or devils, who seek to corrupt mortals, disrupt the proper cycle of reincarnations and, mostly dwelling in Naraka, torment the dead.
Yama was trapped in Naraka and perhaps may have been corrupted or even consumed by the asura.
After all, he was the son of a Hamutian god, Surya, and they are sworn enemies of the gods. They believe that their princes, who are deities in their own right, are the true destined rulers of the cosmos that were overthrown by Indra and his brothers.
And yet, the asuras underestimated the might of Surya's firstborn child. Not only did Yama not allow himself to be destroyed by the denizens of the underworld. He conquered their realm. He slew countless asura as he climbed the pillars, growing stronger and stronger, until he became imbued with dominion over the realm. Yama became the Lord of Naraka.
And he returned to his mother's side. He took her by the hands and went to see his father.
Upon his arrival, Chaya declared Yama and his mother to be imposters. She attacked Yama, wounding him, and Rakta-Beej prepared to attack Saranya as well. But Saranya could not mistake the love of his bride, realizing he had been duped, and interrupted the battle. With ease, he cast down the two asuras down into the pits of Naraka and cursed them to fear his light forever after.
It is said that Rakta-Beej is the father of a strain of vampires and this is the reason for their aversion to light. The Blood Prince and his mother dwell in exile, plotting against the gods, and especially against Yama.
Yama became the judge of souls who enter Naraka. Good souls are allowed to immediately rejoin the cycle of rebirth and the bad souls are thrown down into the pits to climb their way back out.
Once returned to his side, Saranya was forgiven for her disobedience and together the two had a second child. Yami the River Maiden who is the embodiment of Raj-Hamut's rivers and provides passage of the material body of the dead to the sea as a mirror of their journey to the afterlife and reincarnation.
